When Glass Arts Collective artist Barbara (BJ) Fitzgerald received the commission, she had no idea it would lead to one of her most heartfelt ones yet.

But knew this piece had to feel like a blooming celebration of the bond between the two women. She carefully chose each color and form to echo a vibrant garden in motion. Layered poppies, bird of paradise, and leaves of various greens and blues flow across three glass panels, anchored by a playful band of geometric elements. A visual conversation, playful and unstructured, just like the easy conversations that happen between sisters.

Local resident Carladawn had never been to Glass Arts Collective before, but she reached out to Nancy with the hope that she could help with a simple but touching request: she wanted to surprise her sister, Linda, with a stunning piece of glass art that would brighten the space between the kitchen and living room of their home and mirror the lovely view of the outdoor garden— a gift of joy, color, and sisterly love.

BJ knew this piece had to feel like a blooming celebration of the bond between the two women.

When Carladawn brought Linda to the studio to pick up the finished piece, Linda-speechless at first-stood gazing at it and tracing the lines of color and texture, fascinated by the piece and the process it took to complete it.

What started as a surprise became something far more enduring.

SEPTEMBER 2024- Artist in Residence Barbara (BJ) Fitzgerald

Barbara Fitzgerald, affectionately known as BJ to her friends, is a resident of Ventura, CA. Her impressive career has always been intertwined with a deep well of creativity. From transforming her backyard into an oasis to mastering the art of beekeeping, painting on silk, and more, Barbara’s artistic journey is as diverse as it is inspiring. In the past five years, she has embraced the medium of fused glass, discovering a natural affinity for this art form. Barbara loves how effortlessly she can merge techniques from her previous artistic endeavors into her glass creations, producing pieces that are as innovative as they are beautiful.

Barbara has found a wonderful niche in glass, creating your favorite pet in glass.  Barbara is accepting commissions to create these beautiful works of art for you, your friends or family members. They make wonderful gifts.

We extend a warm invitation to all art enthusiasts, collectors, and those with a curiosity for the extraordinary to join us in celebrating the incredible talent of this month’s artist, Barbara J. Fitzgerald.

When you purchase any of Barbara’s pieces, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Ventura County Library Foundation.

Barbara’s art is on exhibit for the entire month of September during normal studio hours.
